Chris's Pizza in Toco Hill Shopping Center is one of those old familiar places.  Although the name emphasizes pizza, it's best to think of it as closer to a Greek diner with an emphasis on pizza.  I've eaten there many times and had pasta, chicken parm, etc.  The decor is wonderful.  They have managed astonishingly well to approximate the atmosphere of a restaurant in Greece given that they are in an Atlanta strip mall.  The decor is white with sea blue seats.  The entire space is lit by two huge skylights that give the sort of natural light that makes the Mediterranean such an appealing place.

I had the pizza lunch special.  My Greek salad was of the lettuce variety but it was very pleasant.  This is my pizza with green mushrooms on top.  The pizza is workmanlike.  The crust is medium thick and just a little tough.  But it is perfectly fine and today the location definitely made this stop worthwhile.

Cafe Lily is one of those places that I've walked past dozens of times but never tried.  We went there tonight for a Georgia Tech event at the behest of my friend Yorai.  I had assumed from the name that the menu was vaguely French.  To my surprise, it is actually Greek and Mediterranean.  This turned out to be a wonderful treat.
When I realized that the menu was Greek-influenced, I had to try the horiatiki salad.  Those of you who read this blog regularly have read my occasional rant about the unwanted appearance of lettuce in the American Greek salad.  This, boys and girls, is what a Greek salad is meant to be.  The presentation I've seen in Greece is a little different, but this gets the list of ingredients exactly right: tomato, feta, onion, cucumber, olives, all in an olive oil and lemon juice dressing. This style of salad is both refreshing and satisfying.
Yorai steered me away from eggplant and toward lamb.  My lamb chops were excellent: juicy and tender.  They had a light covering of pepper herbs that wonderfully complemented the meat.  The potatoes were finished to exactly the right level of crunchiness.   If only all breakfast potatoes were so well prepared...

Pastries a Go Go is in downtown Decatur. I've been there twice and it seems to be a very popular spot. Despite the name, it has a full menu. I had a Greek salad and vegetable soup. The Greek salad was very good with a sweet balsamic vinegar dressing. But I should use this opportunity to air my grieveances about Greek salads. I've eaten Greek salads in Greece. (They're called mother's salad there. Ordering a Greek salad in Greece is about as productive as ordering a Denver omelet in Denver.) Their Greek salads don't have lettuce---they are tomatoes, onion, green pepper, and feta cheese. For some reason---probably cost---Americans insist on filling their Greek salads with lettuce.

But it is Pastries a Go Go and my thoughts eventually strayed from my healthy lunch to the glass case of cakes and cookies. The individual buttercream cakes sang their siren song to me, but I managed to resist their allure. I finally foundered on the shoals of a macadamia nut and white chocolate cookie. Oh, what a way to go! The combination was decadent and it was all based on a cookie that was the perfect combination of moist and flaky.
