Woodfire Grill is one of the best restaurants in the country. I've driven past it dozens of times on Cheshire Bridge Road but it never caught my attention. The building is low-key but bigger than it looks on the outside. The decor is California craftsman.

My friends and I decided to try the prix fixe menu. The first course had a delicate shrimp and okra that was described as lightly fried. It was indeed---it was just warm enough to fit in with the dish but not obviously cooked. Firm okra is a very different sensation than the mushy okra that is infamous in the South. It was a great complement to the shrimp.

Catherine had the vegetarian option, which included heirloom tomatoes.

The second course was octopus, also lightly cooked, and black rice cooked in squid ink. The result was very delicate and a definite taste of the sea.

The third course was bob white quail and pork belly. The quail had a wonderful glaze on it. The pork belly was very porky. In addition to the sauce, it included a bit of egg yolk that had been cooked sous vide.

I forgot to take a picture of my favorite course, the duck. It was cooked sous vide and finished on the grill. The result was very tender and flavorful with just the right touch of smoke on the outside. This meal was my first real taste of sous vide and I must say it was good.

The dessert course was cake with rasperry ice cream and a white chocolate ganache. The white chocolate was the star of the plate---it had the consistency of soft butter.

Matty Cakes is on Piedmont, just south of where it intersects with Cheshire Bridge Road. They have a wonderful bakery. Quite frankly, I didn't know that they serve sandwiches until a friend told me---I was too enamored of the cupcakes to look further. They have announced that they will scale back to cakes only in a few days in order to help them survive as a business. I do hope they survive and thrive.

This is their selection of cupcakes. I bought several small cakes as gifts for Valentine's Day: cake with raspberry filling, coated with chocolate. I have so far restrained myself from eating them myself but I can testify that their cupcakes are wonderful. They also make amazing decorated cakes with all sorts of marzipan fancies.

Rain is a relatively new restaurant, about a year or so old. My friend Leslie recommended it and I was finally able to try it. It's at the corner of LaVista and Cheshire Bridge Road. It serve both Thai and sushi. The decor is tastefully modern.

I started off with a vegetable spring roll. As you can see, the presentation of the food matches the modern decor. The dish was lovely and it tasted good, too.

I'm a tuna nut so I went with the tuna lunch. The serving in the upper left was more of a Western salad style while the others were more traditional Sushi. The quality of the fish was very good and everything was very well prepared.

My friend Leslie has excellent taste in restaurants. We visited Nino's on Cheshire Bridge Road. As a former New Jersey resident, I can attest that this is a real-deal Italian family restaurant. The decor is classic: somewhat dark, lots of photos, Sinatra records constantly playing. (The only thing they are missing is a photo of the Chairman of the Board to go with the music.)

We started out with an antipasto, which I've always considered a treat. It has several different types of meat and cheeses along with peppers, eggplant, and other assorted vegetables.

Leslie had the clams with spaghetti in white sauce. The clams were done just right and the pasta was al dente. The sauce was excellent.

I had the lasagna, which is a great comfort food when done right. Nino's version has an excellent balance of the meat, cheese, pasta, and sauce. It's easy to make a lasagna that is too heavy, but this was hearty without being too much.

The Original Pancake House is on the corner of Cheshire Bridge Road and La Vista.  It's part of a small chain with only a few locations in each city. One of their secrets is the enzymes they put in their pancakes, which give them a special tang.  I'm not sure exactly what these enzymes are, but they seem to be related to sourdough.

Since it's strawberry season somewhere in the world, I decided on the strawberry pancakes.  They didn't disappoint.  The strawberries were fresh and in large pieces.  The pancakes were served with whipped cream, butter, and strawberry syrup in addition to the usual pancake syrup. The pancakes are thick and rich.
